AI Assist block

The AI Assist block lets you hand writing and research to the AI right inside a note. The block’s header reads AI Assist. Nothing goes into your note until you review the result and choose to keep it, so your note never changes unexpectedly.

You can open AI Assist from two places.

Put the cursor on an empty line in the body and a faint ✦ Space to continue with AI... hint appears. Press Space to open an AI prompt right there. In an empty note that has only a title, the hint reads Type something or press Space to ask the AI..., and Space works the same way.

When a note is open, an AI bar (Type what you'd like the AI to do… (Space on an empty line)) sits below the editor.

  • Select the bar to show suggested requests and the hint Enter to generate · Esc to close.
  • When you send a request, an AI Assist block is added at the end of the note and starts generating right away.
  • While a prompt you opened with Space on an empty line is open, the bottom bar hides. It comes back when you close that prompt or finish with its result.

Type what you want in the Type what you'd like the AI to do… box and press Enter. Press Esc or click outside the box to close it.

Common requests are ready as suggestions. Selecting one sends that text as your request right away.

  • Keep writing — continue the flow of the note
  • Summarize this — summarize the content so far
  • More detail — expand on the content
  • Key points — pull out the key points

The AI reads the current note and where the block sits before answering, so you can make requests that refer to the note, such as “Put the experiment results above into a table.” Answers are written in the app’s language setting.

When generation starts, AI writing appears and the answer fills the preview as it’s written. Headings, lists, tables, code, formulas and diagrams preview as real blocks.

To stop generating, press Esc or the stop button (Esc to stop).

When generation finishes, AI suggestion · this range will be applied appears and you choose one of three options:

  • Apply — inserts the preview blocks into your note.
  • Edit — inserts the blocks and places the cursor before the first one so you can edit right away.
  • Reject — discards the result and puts back the original empty line.

If the blocks can’t be inserted, you see Couldn't apply the AI suggestion to the note. Please try again.

Depending on your request, the AI decides on its own whether to search the web and scholarly sources, and uses what it finds to support its answer. While it searches, you see statuses such as Analyzing the question, Searching, Searching for more, Organizing search results, Fetching arXiv papers and Generating the answer.

Scholarly search uses databases such as OpenAlex, arXiv and Europe PMC, and sources cited in the answer come in as source links.

AI Assist shares the workspace’s AI credits with the agent and AI Cortex. The server chooses its model automatically; your agent chat model choice doesn’t apply to AI Assist.

  • If you send many requests in a short time, you see Request limit exceeded. Please try again in a moment. Wait a moment and try again.
  • If another AI response is already being generated, you see An AI response is already in progress. Please try again after it finishes.
  • When the monthly AI credits run out you see You've used all of this month's AI credits. They reset on the 1st of each month. Plus and Business provide shared credits based on purchased seats. For the same seat count, Business includes more credits. For details, see Plans and limits.
