Editor basics

The MashNote editor is block-based. Each piece of content — a paragraph, list, table, or image — is its own block that you can add, move, and convert.

Press Enter at the end of a block to create a new text block below it. Choose the new block’s type in one of these ways:

  • Slash (/): type / in an empty text block to open the block menu. Keep typing a block name to filter the menu, then use the arrow keys and Enter to pick one.
  • Plus (+) button: place the cursor in a block or hover over it, then click + on the left to open the same menu.

The block menu offers text, heading, lists (bulleted, numbered, checklist), code, quote, image, delimiter, table, formula, Mermaid diagram, and Import PDF. Block names in the menu are shown in English, such as Text, Heading, and Code, in both the Korean and English UI; only Import PDF follows the UI language. For details on each block, see Block types. For images and PDFs, see Importing images and PDFs.

The AI assistant isn’t in the block menu. Press Space on an empty text line or use the AI input bar at the bottom of the editor. See Formatting and shortcuts.

A block handle (⋮⋮) appears to the left of the active block.

  • Move: drag the handle up or down to reorder blocks.
  • Open options: click the handle or press Ctrl+/ (Mac: Cmd+/) to open the block menu. It has settings specific to each block, such as heading level, list type, or Reset image width, plus common actions like Convert to, Move up, Move down, and Delete. These common items are also shown in English.
  • Change type: convertible blocks can be changed under Convert to. To switch a list between bulleted, numbered, and checklist, use the list settings in the same menu.
  • Indent: in text and lists, Tab indents and Shift+Tab outdents.
  • Select several blocks: press Ctrl+A (Mac: Cmd+A) once to select the current block’s text, and again to select every block in the editor. You can copy or delete the selected blocks together.

The menu that appears when you select text is the inline toolbar, not the block menu. For bold, italic, underline, and other formatting, see Formatting and shortcuts.

The first block of a note is always the document title. You can’t delete it or change it to another block type, and it becomes the note name shown in the sidebar.

  • Press Enter on the title to create a text block right below it.
  • On the title, / is typed as a normal character and Space doesn’t open AI.
  • In the body, you can use H1–H6 heading blocks freely.

MashNote has no save button. Notes save automatically shortly after you stop typing, and the save status appears at the top of the note.

  • Saving… — your changes are being saved.
  • Saved · 14:32 — the time of the last save.

Leave saving to autosave. If you want to save right away, you can also press Ctrl+S (Mac: Cmd+S).

MashNote doesn’t convert Markdown symbols pasted as plain text (#, -, ```, and so on) into blocks. The symbols are entered into the text as-is.

When you copy and paste formatted content, for example from a web page or a document editor, some elements become matching blocks.

Original element Pasted result
Headings (H1–H6) Heading block
Bulleted and numbered lists List block
Tables Table block
Images Image block
Horizontal rules Delimiter block

For quotes, code, formulas, and diagrams, add the block from the block menu first, then paste the content into it.

Paste an address that starts with https:// and ends in an image extension such as .png or .jpg, and the image is inserted as an image block.

The ⋮ menu at the top of a note has:

  • Full width: widens the body to the full screen width. It applies to every note you open in this browser.
  • Export: downloads the note as a file. See Export.
