GitHub integration

When you connect GitHub, AI summarizes commits pushed to your repositories and records them as MashNote activity. Each commit becomes one activity item. Summaries are written in English by default, and in Korean when the commit message is in Korean.

There are two places to connect:

Workspace connection Personal connection
Where Workspace settings → Integrations → GitHub Personal settings → Integrations → GitHub
What it does Brings repository commits into this workspace’s activity feed. Links your GitHub account (My account) and brings commits from your repositories into My Mash (My repositories).
Commits recorded Repositories receiving in this workspace: every commit, whoever pushed it Only commits you authored
Where they go This workspace’s Activity My Mash (and a workspace, depending on your rule)
  1. Open Workspace settings → Integrations. The GitHub card says Brings repository activity (commit pushes) into this workspace's activity feed.
  2. Select Connect GitHub. You go to GitHub’s app installation screen.
  3. Choose the account or organization and the repositories, then approve.
  4. Back in MashNote, the GitHub card lists the installed account and its repositories.

If the repository list doesn’t show yet, the card says Syncing the repository list. Refresh in a moment. To change which repositories the GitHub app can access, select Add or change repositories.

Each repository shows how this workspace receives its commits.

Label Meaning
Receiving in this workspace The repository is linked to this workspace. Every commit, whoever pushed it, is recorded in this workspace’s Activity. Select Unlink to disconnect it.
Default receiver The repository isn’t explicitly linked. It’s handled like a personal repository of the person who connected GitHub: only commits that person authored are recorded, and where they go follows that person’s GitHub (my repositories) rule.
Receive in this workspace / Move to this workspace Links the repository to this workspace. A repository linked to another workspace moves to this one.

For repositories Receiving in this workspace, a commit is shown as a member’s activity when the author’s GitHub account is linked to their MashNote account and they’re a member of this workspace. Ask teammates to link their GitHub account.

The GitHub card in Personal settings → Integrations (Links your commits and repository activity to MashNote) has two parts. To gather commits from your repositories in My Mash, connect both.

My account is used to recognize commits and activity as yours.

  • Authenticate with GitHub (recommended): Sign in on GitHub to verify your account. The status shows @username · Verified, and earlier activity that wasn’t recognized as yours is brought in as your activity. The app shows a message such as Connected. Imported 3 past activities as yours.
  • Enter your GitHub username and select Register: The status shows Unverified, and it applies only to activity that comes in from now on. You can verify later with Authenticate with GitHub.

To change the username, select Change; to disconnect, select Unlink. A username already linked to another account shows That GitHub username is already linked to another account. and can’t be registered.

My repositories brings commits from your GitHub account’s repositories into My Mash.

  1. Select Connect repositories. You go to GitHub’s app installation screen.
  2. Choose the repositories to bring commits from, then approve.
  3. Back in MashNote, the card says Receiving commits from {count} repositories into your activity (My Mash). To change repositories, select Add or change repositories.

My repositories records commits by these rules:

  • Only commits you authored are recorded. The commit author must match your GitHub username, a verified email or your account email; commits by other people or bots are skipped.
  • Where commits go follows the Link setting of the GitHub (my repositories) rule in My Mash. With the default, Just for me (default), they’re recorded only in My Mash; if you pick a workspace, they also appear in that workspace’s Activity.

Connecting organization (team) repositories to a team workspace is done in Workspace settings → Integrations.

  • The default visibility of GitHub activity is Workspace. If you change the Visibility of the GitHub (my repositories) rule in My Mash, it applies to GitHub activity recognized as your commits from then on.
  • The Link rule applies only to commits from repositories not linked to a workspace (Default receiver and My repositories). Commits from repositories Receiving in this workspace are always recorded in that workspace.
  • In My Mash, GitHub items show only their origin workspace and can’t be moved individually or selected in bulk.

For how to use the rules panel, see Activity and My Mash.

Commit summaries use AI. Usage is counted against the workspace the repository is connected to; My repositories connects through the first workspace in your Account menu’s workspace list.

  • If that workspace is on the Free plan and has used all of this month’s free AI usage, commits pushed in the meantime are skipped and not recorded. Skipped commits aren’t brought in later, even after usage resets on the 1st of the month.
  • Plus and Business plans include more monthly AI usage. See Plans and limits.
  • Commits whose AI summary fails aren’t recorded either. MashNote never records a raw commit log without a summary.
